Parents or guardians of students assigned to Turning Point Academy may, in most cases, appeal the reassignment decision within ten days. Information about how to appeal the assignment is included in the assignment letter.

Students assigned to Turning Point Academy must enroll in the appropriate middle or high school campus to begin their alternative education assignment. The student's reassignment letter will indicate the behaviors that led to the reassignment, the duration of the assignment in the alternative setting, and the district-based interventions the student must complete in addition to their assignment at Turning Point Academy. Criteria for transitioning from Turning Point Academy to the student's home school include completing the assigned time, academic progress, behavioral modification, and completion of any interventions. Once a student's criteria have been met, the transition coordinator from Turning Point Academy will contact the family and the student's home school and begin the student's transition process to their home school.

Students may be assigned to community service by their home school or as part of their alternative education placement at Turning Point Academy. Community service is done in five-hour increments and involves service-based projects that enhance students' social-emotional learning skills, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. During community service, there is a session where students participate in restorative practices, allowing them to discuss the behaviors that led to their referral. Through peer mentoring, they learn how to adopt strategies that will help them succeed.

Suppose a student has been assigned to an intervention such as VIP (Violence Interventions Program), SHIP (Sexual Harassment Interventions Program), or SMART (Social Media Awareness Responsibility Training) for violating a rule in the Code of Student Conduct. In that case, they must complete the intervention within 30 days of referral. If a student is assigned an intervention in addition to an alternative education placement at Turning Point Academy, they must complete the intervention before returning to their home school. Intervention classes are held at the Spaugh Administrative Center, 1901 Herbert Spaugh Lane, Charlotte, NC, 28208. The courses last three hours, and a parent or guardian must be present with the student. Once the student completes the intervention class, their home school will be notified that they have satisfied the terms of their referral.
